The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North in the Eastern region, Sammi Awuku, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for some of the appointments made to his government.
Following his victory in the December 7, 2024, presidential election and subsequent swearing-in on January 7, 2025, President Mahama appointed key individuals to lead state agencies and state-owned enterprises in acting capacities.
These appointments are part of the President’s efforts to solidify leadership within critical institutions as he establishes his administration.
On Adom FM’s Burning Issues, the MP, who also served as the former Director-General for the National Lottery Authority (NLA), expressed his satisfaction with the appointment of some young politicians.
Despite belonging to the opposition party, Sammi Awuku said, “Let me also commend the President on some of the appointments he has made because he has recruited some young politicians into government. Look at George Opare Addo, he is a solid guy. He’s been the youth organizer, DC, and now the Minister for Youth and Sports.”
“Sammy Gyamfi too has been appointed to oversee the PMMC. A solid guy, and I reject anyone who says he is too small for the position. Who do you expect should be appointed after toiling for his party? Even my successor, Alhaji Mohammed, is a solid man.”
Sammi Awuku further responded to Ghana’s criticism of the appointment of Mohammed Abdul Salam, a Muslim, as the acting CEO of the NLA. He said that accepting the position does not imply involvement in the lottery business. “When I was appointed to oversee the NLA, I heard people from my church raising concerns. I did my best, and now that Alhaji has replaced me, the same thing is happening. But what I want to say is that the profit made from this lottery is used to support the country’s economy and to help the needy as well.”
