Sam George deserves to be lashed – Miracles Aboagye [Audio]

-

New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Miracles Dennis Aboagye has criticized the government for taking credit for the data reduction during the 68th Independence Day celebration.

Mr. Aboagye argued that telecommunication networks have previously implemented similar reductions, making the recent announcement unremarkable.

He expressed his discontent with the Communications Minister, Sam George, stating that he should be reprimanded for making unnecessary noise over the initiative.

On March 6, 2025, Mr. George announced a special Independence Day data bundle introduced under the directive of President John Mahama in collaboration with three major telecom providers.

MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana, and AT Ghana offered a GHS10 bundle that provided 6GB of data—significantly higher than the usual 1GB or 3GB available on public holidays for the same price.

He emphasized that the initiative reflected the government’s commitment to driving digital transformation nationwide.

However, in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Aboagye dismissed the initiative as a repackaging of an existing practice, stating that it was not worth celebrating.

“This is mediocre, repackaging, and settings. This has always been there, so why did it have to take the president’s instruction? This is nothing new. We are in trouble if this is the measure for appointment. There was no Independence Day celebration with data reduction.

“Sam George is my friend, but he deserves to be lashed for putting the president’s name into disrepute,” he stated.

He noted that data reductions had occurred under the immediate-past Akufo-Addo-led government without the president’s intervention.

“If data reduction is the standard, then Akufo-Addo must be given a third term because it was done without any intervention from him. So if the president is to intervene, then the reduction should have lasted for a month. Why should we get the same package despite a presidential intervention?” he questioned.
