Robber gunned down, one other arrested

The Eastern Regional  Police  on Thursday dawn, gunned down a suspected armed robber when his gang engaged the police in a shoot-out at Apenkwa , a suburb of Koforidua Municipality.

The police managed to arrest one of the suspects, while two others escaped. The police is looking for the two escapees.

The body of the robber, who is yet to be identified, had been deposited at the Koforidua Regional Hospital morgue for autopsy, while the arrested suspect, Godwin Busiga, 45, a Togolese, is helping the police in their investigations.

According to the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO)  Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Ebenezer Tetteh,  the police received  an  intelligence report that some suspected armed robbers suspected to be Togolese and Nigerian Nationals were hiding in an uncompleted building at Apenkwa, preparing to rob a house nearby, occupied by a trader.

Mr Tetteh said the Police from the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) led by DSP Otumi Kartey were dispatched to the scene.

He said immediately the team arrived at the scene, the suspected robbers, numbering about four with one wielding a pump action gun with registration number T078311 opened fire on the police.

The police returned fire and during the exchange, one of the suspected robbers was hit and he died on the spot.

Busiga, a member of the gang was arrested.

DSP Tetteh said one pump action gun, two pinch bars and a brown bag containing a hood (mask) and other personal effects were retrieved from the suspects.
