The Ministry of Roads and Highways is investigating the cause of the rock blast accident at Buduburam, which has resulted in multiple casualties.
The Ministry is working closely with the Ghana Police Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to confirm the number of people affected and to ensure that those injured receive the necessary medical attention.
The accident occurred during a rock-blasting operation along the Buduburam section of the Accra-Winneba highway, part of a construction project, leading to fears that four people may have lost their lives, while several others sustained critical injuries.
According to the Ministry’s statement, the blast, which lasted only a few minutes, was carried out after traffic had been stopped on the road to allow the operation to proceed.
“Yesterday, a blasting accident occurred at the Kasoa-Winneba Road Dualization Project site in Buduburam, Central Region, leading to fatalities and injuries. The Ministry extends its condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragic event.
“We also wish those injured a swift recovery. Investigations are currently ongoing to determine the cause of the accident. The Ministry is coordinating with relevant institutions, including the Ghana Police Service and NADMO, to assess the full impact of the incident and ensure that all affected individuals receive the necessary support.
“It is important to note that 21 controlled blasting operations have previously been conducted at the same site without incident, in collaboration with NADMO and the Ghana Police Service. The Ministry reassures the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and the findings will be made public,” the statement said.
