The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) held as many as 318 press conferences in its first year in opposition.
The press conferences ranged from calling for investigations into reported acts of corruption to demanding the resignation of certain ministers or other government appointees.
Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey, who revealed this in an interview on Adom FM said the numerous press conferences that the party organized in 2017 is gradually turning the party into a ‘press conference party’.
He revealed the startling statistics while reacting to the Minority’s demand for Parliament reconvene and discuss the $100,000.00 fees charged at the Diaspora Business Awards organized by the Ministry of Trade.
Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak who raised the issue on the floor of the House claimed that the amount charged at the awards was not approved by Parliament.
According to him, the monies were also not accounted for in the Internally Generated Funds (IGF) of the Ministry.
“Mr. Speaker, this is very worrying because so far as I am concerned, the fees and charges that we approved in this house did not say that if we wanted to interact with the President you have to pay 100,000. Mr. Speaker, this gives credence to all that we have been hearing in the media that access to the President is very difficult,” he said.
However, the Trade Ministry, in a statement denied the claims made by the MP.
This call, the Ablekuma Central MP said is not in order. He further accused the NDC of gradually becoming a ‘press conference party’ as they are noted for hosting the media just to be heard.
“For me I think that the minority wants to be heard and if they go ahead to do a press conference, that will be 319 press conferences since they went into opposition. In fact even if you are a Member of Parliament on the side of the majority and you are seen talking to someone and they see you, they will organise a press conference’’ he told Adom News.
Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey said he will not be surprised to see the minority organizing a press conference on top of their petition to the speaker.
