Former Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus has signed for Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy and says he wants to “bring the championship back” to the club.

The 35-year-old spent 12 years at Dortmund before leaving at the end of last season.

He is following in some illustrious footsteps given David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are three of Galaxy’s most famous ex-players.

Although LA Galaxy are the most successful team in MLS history, they have not won the title since a side including Robbie Keane did it in 2014.

Since then a new local rival has emerged in LAFC, who won the trophy in 2022, and now have French World Cup winners Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud in their squad.

When MLS resumes its season later this month, LA Galaxy will be looking to hold on to top spot in the Western Conference. LAFC are their nearest challengers, two points behind with two games in hand.

“I will be ready for a duel with Giroud,” joked Reus.

“I just wanted to play football and have fun with a new experience at a new club. LA Galaxy have not won the title for 10 years. This year I think they, or we, have a good chance to bring the championship back. That is why I am here.”

Reus spent three years playing with England’s Jude Bellingham at Dortmund and said the Real Madrid star will manage the demands of the upcoming season.

Bellingham scored 23 goals in his debut season for Madrid, including 17 in his first 20 games. He also claimed 13 assists, and is third favourite, behind Real team-mate Vinicius Jr and Manchester City midfielder Rodri, for the Ballon D’Or.

Bellingham was man of the match in Real’s Super Cup victory against Atalanta on Wednesday and Reus is confident the 21-year-old will continue to impress.

“The way he plays, he invests everything in every game, 100%. He is very physical and he never stops. You saw it in the Euros. He was exhausted at the end of the games. But he will manage it because he has had a lot of experience now.”
