Respect Supreme court ruling on vacant seats – AG to Parliament

-

The Attorney General (AG), Godfred Yeboah Dame, has urged all parties in the case involving vacant parliamentary seats to comply with the ruling of the Supreme Court.

In a 5-2 majority decision on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the court ruled that the declaration was unconstitutional.

The seven-member panel, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, therefore delivered a ruling in favour of the Efutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who was the plaintiff.

Addressing journalists after the hearing, the AG stated, “The Court has spoken in very clear and emphatic terms, and the only thing anybody has to do is respect the Court’s decision.”

He emphasised that adhering to the verdict reflects the mark of a civilised democratic order and leaves no room for any argument.

The Speaker declared four seats in parliament vacant, with the decision affecting three NPP seats and one NDC seat.

This was after the MPs decided to run in the upcoming polls on party tickets other than those that brought them into the House.

The ruling means that the NPP remains the majority in Parliament, while the NDC will be in the minority.

Chief Justice Torkornoo, however, noted that a detailed explanation of the ruling would be provided at the Registrar’s office by Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

With the sitting indefinitely adjourned on Thursday, November 7, 2024, it is not yet clear when the House will reconvene, with barely 25 days to the December 7 election.
