Residents of Gomoa Assin in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region are terrified following sporadic gunshots fired by unidentified men today, ahead of a visit to the community by the Akyempim queen mother.
The residents are calling on the Police to beef up security in the area, especially with the general elections approaching, to help reduce tension.
Around three gunmen stormed the Gomoa Assin community on an unregistered vehicle and began shooting sporadically at the forecourt of the Akyempim palace.
The shooting occurred ahead of a planned visit by the queen mother of the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Area, Obaatanpa Ama Edua I, to the palace in Gomoa Assin.
The gunmen fled the town before the arrival of the police, but residents remain terrified.
Speaking to Adom News, Nana Kweku Essibu, a principal member of the Asona Anona Royal Family and spokesperson for the queen mother, called on the government and state security to improve security, especially with the 2024 elections approaching.
Meanwhile, residents fear that the tension between the queen mother and the Paramount chief may escalate.
The Gyaasehene of Gomoa Assin, where the paramountcy is situated, Nana Kwabena Kwang, is also calling for the intervention of state security to prevent any potential bloodshed.
