#ReOccupyJulorbiHouse: Police treated us unfairly – Economic Fighters League

-

Leader of the Economic Fighters League, Ernesto Yeboah, has accused the Ghana Police Service of unfair treatment during the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

The three-day demonstration, organized by Democracy Hub from September 21-23, was meant to raise concerns over economic mismanagement and other national issues.

However, tensions escalated on the second day, with a major scuffle between protesters and the Police.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem on Tuesday, Mr Yeboah revealed that several demonstrators were arrested in their homes even after the protest.

He accused the Police of targeting activists who are not members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Yeboah, the Police’s actions suggest that, party interests are valued more than the people’s well-being.

“The Ghana police treated us unfairly. They have made Ghanaians realize that if you are not part of the duopoly (NDC, NPP), it is like you are not Ghanaian. Days before our protest, the NDC protested and used the same roads that the Ghana police claimed were security zones. They value party flags more than the people in the country.

“The police went to people’s houses and arrested them; they have abducted our members. Some demonstrators were arrested in their homes. The leaders of this country value their party flags more than the lives they are destroying with galamsey. We were only resisting oppressive rule; the police had no right to put barricades anywhere, especially when we notified them in accordance with the 1992 Constitution.

“Everything points to the fact that this country has no leaders because if we did, we would be making use of our abundant resources. The people who we were standing against were intimidated by the police, whereas these same people could have been put at illegal mining sites to prevent it,” he said.
