The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has celebrated a significant achievement with the commissioning of the refurbished Salaga Slave Market and the Salaga Slave Wells.

The ceremony, held in Salaga to launch Emancipation 2024, was attended by distinguished guests including the Lepowura, representing the Kpembewura, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), the Board Chairman of GTA, Mr. Seth Adjei Baah, the Member of Parliament for the area, and directors of various agencies in the Savannah region.

Welcoming the attendees, the MCE, Richard Broni, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture and the Ghana Tourism Authority for fulfilling their promise to redevelop the site after their visit to the Kpembewura in 2023.

In his speech, the CEO of GTA, Mr Akwasi Agyeman, emphasized the significance of the Salaga Slave Market and the Wells in Ghana’s heritage tourism offerings.

He stressed the importance of acknowledging the past while striving for a future of healing and unity.

Mr. Agyeman thanked all involved for their collaborative efforts in restoring and preserving these historical sites, highlighting GTA’s commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural heritage.

The Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Egyapa Mercer emphasized  the need to honour the memory of those who suffered during the transatlantic slave trade.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to promoting heritage tourism and fostering connections with the diaspora.

The Lepowura Bore-enasa I, speaking on behalf of the Kpembewura, pledged the Traditional Authority’s support in preserving the site.
