The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on Thursday, April 10, began demolishing illegal structures on the Weija and Dansoman Ramsar sites.
This action follows President John Dramani Mahama’s recent inspection of Ramsar sites and flood-prone areas in Accra, during which he emphasized that any buildings on protected lands and waterways would be forcibly removed.
Ahead of the exercise, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo expressed frustration over the delay by transport company Caitec in reversing the illegal reclamation of parts of the Weija Ramsar site.
Ocloo stated that despite the presence of machines, the company had not complied with previous orders to restore the area.
“There are a lot of machines there, so releasing the machine shouldn’t be a problem for them. This is intentional, and I don’t know who is compromising with them,” Ocloo remarked. “They are aware that the exercise is to start today, only for us to come and meet what we just met. If the company refuses, we will enforce the law,” she added.
The government has threatened to intervene directly if the company continues to defy the directive.
Ocloo emphasized that the company had been instructed by the President to remove all materials used to fill the area and dredge the site at their own expense.
The demolition effort is part of a broader initiative to remove unauthorized structures, restore natural watercourses, and reduce flooding risks during the rainy season.
