Minister of Communications, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has urged all Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card users to re-register their cards to serve as protection from cyber-crimes.
“The re-registration will reduce mobile phone related crimes such as prank calls, cyber-crime, mobile money fraud and its related issues to improve upon our general security,” she said.
Speaking at the Meet-the-Press Series in Accra on Monday, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful outlined implementation measures SIM card users must adhere to “for their own benefit and collective peace of mind.
“Failure to register SIM cards makes it difficult for law enforcement agencies to identify SIM card owners, track criminals who use phones for illegal activities, curb incidents such as phone theft, fake text messages inciting violence, kidnapping, and to combat crime such as fraud,” she said.
To the Communications Minister, mobile network subscribers must not opt for pre-registered SIM cards as it goes contrary to the appropriate SIM regulation policies enacted since 2011.
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful disclosed that all unregistered mobile SIM cards will be deactivated by 2020 as part of steps to be rolled out for fresh SIM cards on January 1, 2020.
