PURC justifies utility tariffs increment

-

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has defended the recent increase in electricity and water tariffs, despite persistent supply disruptions in parts of the country.

The Commission on Friday, April 11, 2025, announced that electricity and water tariffs would rise by 14.75% and 4.02% respectively, effective May 3.

The PURC attributed the adjustment to fluctuations in the exchange rate, rising domestic inflation, the cost of natural gas, and shifts in the electricity generation mix.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Commission’s Media Relations Manager, Charles Joojo Entsi, explained that the increment was part of a broader plan to help recover a GH₵976 million debt owed by utility providers, which is critical to sustaining stable supply.

Mr. Entsi noted that after extensive consultations, the Commissioners settled on a plan for consumers to shoulder 50% of the outstanding debt.

“Because if the consumer is to pay all, there will be trouble,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the announcement has sparked public backlash, with many Ghanaians questioning the fairness of the tariff hikes amid what they describe as unreliable and inconsistent utility services.
