Pupils stranded as contractor locks govt school over debt

-

Pupils at the Galilea M/A Basic School have been left stranded after Geos Anointing Construction Company locked down a six-unit classroom block due to unpaid debts from the government.

The action comes in response to the government’s failure to settle payments for a 12-unit classroom block that was awarded to the contractor in 2017.

According to the Public Relations Officer for Geos Anointing Construction Company, Christopher Newman, the government has not compensated the company for the completed first phase of the project.

This financial shortfall has led to severe repercussions, including the confiscation of two houses belonging to the company’s owner by banks.

In an interview with Adom News, Newman expressed frustration over the situation, calling on the government to fulfill its payment obligations.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive and staff from the Ga South Assembly have arrived at the school to assess the situation and negotiate with the contractor to allow pupils and teachers to resume their teaching and learning activities.

The future of the students hangs in the balance as discussions continue on how to resolve the issue promptly.
