The Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) is set to begin an indefinite strike today, Monday, October 21, 2024, following the government’s failure to address their demands for institution-specific allowances despite multiple attempts at resolution.
The PSWU expressed frustration over the government’s refusal to honour these allowances, which they claim has worsened the financial burden on public service workers.
The Union has been advocating for allowances that reflect the unique challenges faced by its members in various institutions.
In response, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has urged the PSWU to reconsider its decision, warning that the strike will disrupt ongoing negotiations.
On Thursday, October 17, the FWSC emphasised that continuing negotiations will be difficult if the union goes ahead with industrial action.
The PSWU is also concerned about delays in implementing recommendations from a nine-member committee appointed in 2022 to review the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP).
The Committee’s recommendations, aimed at addressing compensation issues in the public sector, have yet to be acted upon, further motivating the union’s decision to strike.
The FWSC, in its October 17 statement, reiterated its readiness to continue negotiations but stressed that the strike would hinder progress.
The FWSC also noted that the strike violates the rules of engagement and the Labour Act, Act 651, signed by both parties.
They added that delays in negotiations are not their fault, as the necessary processes must be followed to secure a mandate and finalize discussions.
