Public health delivery in shambles as govt fails to build district hospital in Shama

-

Residents of Shama District in the Western Region have voiced their frustration over the poor state of public health services in the area.

Despite being home to Ghana’s largest thermal power plant and several manufacturing companies, the district lacks a public hospital and relies on a single District Health Centre that operates without a resident doctor.

Healthcare infrastructure has not kept pace with the significant growth in the area, with only a few under-resourced Community Health Improvement Services (CHIPS) compounds and private facilities available.

In 2020, President Nana Akufo-Addo broke ground for a 100-bed district hospital, pledging €32 million in funding. Yet, construction has not started, leading to growing scepticism among residents about the project’s viability.

The District Chief Executive has acknowledged these concerns, while residents called for urgent improved healthcare services.

“It was all politics. Even the machines the contractor brought to the site have been removed. I drive there often and noticed that the road created has only encouraged others to build in the area,” a resident old Citi News.
