Providing Voters Register Lists breakdown not required by law

-

The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that although it is not required by law to provide statistics of the Voters Register Lists, it granted the request by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the spirit of responsiveness.

This was made known after the EC, on Wednesday, 6th November 2024, provided all registered political parties and independent presidential candidates with soft copies of the Certified Voters Register, in accordance with Sub-Regulation 4 of Regulation 27 of Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 91.

The soft copies, which were presented to the political parties on external hard drives, contained the Valid Voters Register, the Exceptions List, the Multiples List, the Transferred Voters List, the Absent Voters List, the Manual Verification List, the Proxy Voters List, and the Special Voters List.

At the meeting, the NDC requested the summary of the above lists.

Although the Commission stated that it is not required by law to provide statistics of the various lists to parties, in the spirit of responsiveness, it granted the NDC’s request.

The Commission added that, to enhance transparency and accountability, it took the time to generate the summaries requested on a regional basis.

Responding to questions from the media and other stakeholders as to why the summaries were not initially included, the EC noted that since 1992, it has always provided only the soft copies of the certified voters register without the breakdown of statistics requested by the NDC.
