Promise to fix streetlights has been fulfilled – Greater Accra Regional Minister

The Greater Accra Regional Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Shai-Osudoku, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has confirmed the successful installation and repair of streetlights in parts of the capital.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Madam Ocloo disclosed that several malfunctioning streetlights have been fixed as part of efforts to enhance security and visibility.

As part of her commitment to improving public infrastructure, Ocloo had set a 50-day deadline for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to repair all faulty streetlights in Greater Accra after assuming office.

The initiative, which began on February 3, 2025, was aimed at ensuring that the national capital remains well-lit and secure at night.

During an inspection tour of the newly repaired streetlights, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made, proudly announcing that her target had been met.

“I can confidently say that my 50-day target has been fulfilled. A total of 129 streetlights have been successfully repaired, ensuring better visibility and security in our communities,” she said.

Madam Ocloo also responded to recent calls from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had demanded that she appear before Parliament to explain why streetlights in Accra, particularly around the seat of government, Jubilee House, were not functioning.

In response, Ocloo confirmed that the streetlights at Jubilee House, which had been malfunctioning for the past eight years, have now been fixed.

“The streetlights at Jubilee House have been repaired after eight years of malfunctioning,” she stated.

She emphasized that the initiative is part of the broader “Resetting Agenda” led by President John Mahama to improve infrastructure and address long-standing challenges in the region.

Accompanied by the media, the Minister and her team visited some of the newly repaired streets to highlight the importance of street lighting in maintaining security and visibility throughout Greater Accra.

To ensure sustainability, Ocloo had previously tasked the MMDAs with maintaining streetlights within their respective jurisdictions.

“I urge everyone to remain vigilant,” she added. “Anyone caught damaging streetlight cables will face legal consequences, including possible imprisonment. We must all take responsibility for protecting our infrastructure.”

Daniel Nkrumah, Coordinating Director for La Dade-Kotopon, assured the public that efforts to maintain the repaired streetlights would continue.

“We are committed to upholding the Minister’s vision and ensuring that the streetlights remain functional for the benefit of all residents,” Nkrumah stated.

With the successful completion of this initiative, Minister Ocloo reiterated her commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing safety and quality of life for residents of Greater Accra.
