Deputy Minister for Energy, William Owuraku Aidoo has said the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will improve the Energy Sector of the country.
Government has rejected demands by ECG workers for a severance package as a new company takes over management of the utility firm.
Government says any such payment would only be made to workers who voluntarily decide to severe their relationship with ECG after the takeover.
The workers have this week been demanding fresh monies even before the new company assumes management of the firm.
Some concerned messages from the public domain also suggest that the privatization of the utility firm will decrease efficiency should the ‘deal’ wave through.
But in an interview with the Deputy Minister, he indicated that no worker would be laid off hence the privatization is only aimed to improve the Energy sector.
The move, he added will cause an increment with regard to efficiency in the firm as such the prices of electricity tariffs might likely drop.
“It was guaranteed that no worker would be sacked. ECG has a problem. The NPP government said he would love for the ECG to be privatized. It will improve the sector…”
“The efficiency drive will increase work performance that will perhaps cause the prices to fall short. The bills can come down. The hope of the millennium challenge compact is to bring more efficiency…” Mr Owuraku said to Accra based Okay FM on Thursday.
He however debunked claims that the NPP government accepted a loan in favour of the Second Millennium Challenge Compact.
“If we had money we don’t need the compact. It’s a grant from America, it’s not a loan. The second millennium compact is to boost the energy sector…” he said.
“The government doesn’t have to do business. We need to leave it to the businessmen. Government business doesn’t help well. We are a pro-business party. We are conservative and believe in the private sector…” he maintained.
