The National Coordinator of the One District One Factory Project, Gifty Ohene-Konadu says the private sector is going to drive the One District One Factory Project in order to strengthen the private sector.
At a consultative meeting with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) at the Trade Fair in Accra, Ohene-Konadu said government will not steer affairs of the factories but would be left in the hands of the private sector after nurturing the factories.
“As a government, we have involved the private sector in general and the AGI in particular in the development of the concept paper to guide the implementation of the policy right from the outset because we believe that it is the private sector that will drive this initiative and its sustainability to a large extent depends on the private sector”, she said.
The Coordinator said that the AGI is not only recognized as a partner but also as a pillar upon which this initiative will thrive.
The coordinator further said that the government was pleased with the enthusiasm and eagerness of the private sector to get involved and ensure that the dream of the Akufo-Addo administration to industrialise Ghana comes to fruition.
The factories to be established through the one district, one factory project, Madam Ohene-Konadu stated would also be excluded from corporate taxes so they can survive.
Chairman of the AGI, Tony Oteng-Gyasi said they wish government would rather scrap the pre-production tax instead of the cooperate tax
He however said that the AGI was happy to be involved in the whole process and stated the readiness of many of their members to see to the success of the whole programme.
Mr Oteng Gyasi also called on the government to work to provide a ready market for the industries.
