Pregnant woman killed, 2 others injured by unknown gunmen at Kukpalgu

-

A pregnant woman has been killed after unknown gunmen opened fire on a group returning from a prayer session in Kukpalgu, in the Tatale-Sanguli District of the Northern Region.

JoyNews has gathered that the woman was shot in the stomach and died on the spot.

Two others who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment. Initially treated at a herbal center in Gbande, they have since been referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. One of the injured was shot in the hand, while the other sustained a gunshot wound that entered through her back and exited through her chest.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but locals suspect it may be linked to the recent appointment of a non-Dagomba as District Chief Executive (DCE).

The people of Zabzugu expressed displeasure over the decision, as they were expecting a native to be appointed. The release of the list of nominees for the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) has sparked unrest in the area.

The attack has heightened tensions in the region, leaving the community in grief and fear.

Residents are calling on authorities to investigate the incident and address the underlying causes to restore peace and stability.

This marks the second major disturbance in the area within three months.

On February 20, 2025, a clash between hunters and farmers in the area resulted in the death of one person and left several others injured. Efforts were made by various groups to broker peace in Zabzugu. However, just as it seemed the situation had been resolved, this latest incident has renewed fears of further conflict.

Residents are now urging the District Security Committee (DISEC) and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to find a lasting solution to the recurring unrest.
