Radhika Sharma could not help but seek advice from a relationship expert when she could no longer tolerate her husband’s habit of watching porn. “My husband insists on watching porn while having sex. I am not very comfortable with it and it makes me feel very conscious. However, the same is not the case with him. He gets excited and seems very satisfied when we have sex while watching porn.” Radhika’s concern is not uncommon. In fact, a new study now proves that watching porn instigates body-related insecurities in women. And such insecurities not only adversely affect their arousal but reduce their interest in having sex with their partner.
The study was published in the Journal of Women’s Health and it explores the connection between porn consumption of heterosexual women and how it affects their sexual experience. According to the study, thinking of pornographic material during sexual intercourse with a partner can trigger insecurities about their looks in women and thereby reduce their enjoyment level while having sex.
“The researchers demonstrate a clear difference between the role of pornography in sexual experiences of women compared to men,” said Susan G Kornstein from Virginia Commonwealth University in the US.
“Whereas the relationship tends to be more direct in young heterosexual men and just viewing pornographic material is associated with reduced sexual intimacy and satisfaction, women make the material part of their personal sexual experience and carry the pornographic script into their intimate partner experiences,” Kornstein said.
For the findings, the research team surveyed 706 heterosexual women aged 18-29 in the US, associating the consumption of pornography with sexual preferences, experiences and concerns.
