Politicians fast losing dignity in Ghana – MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Atebubu Amantin in the Brong Ahafo Region has lamented over the fast rate at which politicians in the country are losing their dignities before the populace.

Kofi Amoakohene speaking on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Monday said the increasing lack of respect for politicians is a largely as a result of the increasing rate at which political actors are being accused of one form of corrupt acts or the other.

“Politics is fast losing its dignity in the country, even persons who have never signed vouchers in their lives are all of a sudden acquiring numerous V8s which they are struggling to justify and that is making politicians lose the dignity they used to have…,” he said.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo addressing a section of the Ghanaian community in the United Kingdom (UK) at a public forum in London last Friday said the persistent engagement of some state officials and private individuals in acts of corruption is undermining the capacity of the country to control its own development.

“The fight against corruption is about ourselves; it is not so big a theoretical thing in the air. They (corrupt officials) are degrading our capacity to control our own development.

“To the extent that God gives me health and strength, I am going to do my best to make sure that the fight against corruption is won,” he said.

And this fight, the NPP Legislator said must be waged continuously as the country is losing a great amount of its resources to corrupt public officers. He added that corruption is fast eroding the dignity politicians have in the country and hence the intensification of the fight is very necessary.

The sad aspect of it, he said, was that political parties are now fighting on which of the parties have more corrupt members than the other or engaged in scandals than the other.

“Politicians are now competing on which party is more corrupt than the other…interestingly, the corrupt officials are either Christians or Muslims, but they must all be prosecuted even if it would go beyond the Mahama regime…,” he recommended.
