The Political Science Students Association (POSSA) Inter-Tertiary Connect Initiative has honoured Mr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, President of Africa Growth Solution, for his role in the success of the association’s maiden event.
A citation presented to him reads, “Your tremendous contribution in making the first edition of the POSSA Inter-Tertiary Connect Initiative a grand success is immensely acknowledged and appreciated.”
It further praised his commitment to academic excellence and dedication to shaping the future of Political Science students across various universities in Ghana, describing his contribution as having significantly enhanced the success of the historic gathering.
The Association expressed its sincerest appreciation and said it was honoured to have shared the experience with Mr. Opong-Fosu.
Addressing the students, Mr. Opong-Fosu, who is a former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, reflected on the contrasting values of leadership across generations.
He noted that during his era as a student and youth activist, “we were driven by ideological conviction such as nationalism and patriotism.”
According to him, the current generation of student and youth leaders is often driven by the pursuit of power, fame, privilege, and material gains.
Mr. Opong-Fosu further lamented the erosion of values such as probity and accountability in public office, adding that this has led to the frequent exposure of corruption and unethical behavior in Ghana’s public service.
“The reset agenda cannot achieve the intended objectives unless there is a shift in mindset regarding leadership purposes and governance,” he stated.
He also cited the examples of China, South Korea, and Singapore, which were at a similar development stage as Ghana at the time of independence, and have since transitioned to developed status — a feat he attributed to a decisive mindset shift from poverty to wealth-creation, and from dependency on external powers to self-reliance.
