Police shoot and kill man who stabbed officer at Doboya

A 32-year-old man and a native of Daboya in the North Gonja District of Savannah Region, Abudulai Mustapha, is said to have been shot and killed by police personnel for allegedly stabbing another police officer with a knife.

According to eyewitness accounts, a complaint was lodged at the Daboya Police station in the early hours of Tuesday claiming that the deceased, who stayed with his aged mother, threatened to kill her.

Following this, the station detailed four unarmed Community Police Officers to the deceased’s house but upon arrival, the deceased who is alleged to be unsound in mind, ignored questions from the police and walked into his room where he later emerged with a cutlass and knife.

He then pursued the officers until one of them, Tidoro Mohammed, fell to the ground and was allegedly stabbed by the deceased before a team of police reinforcement shot and killed him.

An eyewitness and the North Gonja District Coordinator of National Youth Employment Programme, Adam Yahaya told JoyNews that the reinforced team officers were initially unsuccessful in arresting the suspect after a run in the bush for nearly two hours.

While they were returning to the station, the suspect emerged and begun to attack them leading to the firing of shots of which hit him resulting in his death, Mr. Yahya narrated.

Meanwhile, the wounded officer is said to be receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the Northern Region, the same facility the body of the deceased is being kept.

The Savannah Regional Police Command is yet to issue a statement on the incident.
