Interior Minister-designate, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has lauded the Ghana Police Service for their exemplary handling of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
According to him, the police’s strategic decision to refrain from using firearms during the polls played a significant role in reducing tensions at polling centers, even in the face of provocation.
Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee in Parliament on Friday, January 24, the Asawase MP highlighted his intention to support the police in prosecuting individuals who committed electoral offenses.
‘I commend the police for how they managed the elections. They refused to use firearms despite provocation, choosing instead to record misconduct on video for evidence, which they are now using to prosecute offenders. If given the nod, I will fully support these prosecutions,’ he stated.
He further noted that the police’s restraint helped prevent fatalities linked to their actions during the elections.
‘The decision not to use firearms is why no deaths have been attributed to the police during the elections. Some shootings were recorded from the army, which is on record, but none from the police. This approach deserves commendation,’ he added.
Muntaka Mubarak also praised the National Election Security Task Force for their professionalism and effective coordination during the polls, describing their performance as vital to maintaining peace and order.
