Police probe violent Abetifi clashes

-

The police have begun investigations into a clash at Abetifi in the Eastern region that left six people injured on Thursday.

The clash ensued after a group of armed men, led by Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, the Abrewatia, stormed the Abetifi Palace to destool Kwahu Adontenhene Akyemfour, Asiedu Agyemang III, who is now acting as the President of the Kwahu Traditional Area.

The men, initially thought to be National Security operatives according to residents, escorted her to the Abetifi Palace, where they detained Asiedu Agyemang III.

Yaa Asantewaa and the armed men forced Akyemfour Agyemang III to an older palace nearby, where she performed some traditional rites aimed at destooling him, including the slaughtering of a sheep as part of the ritual.

This act of destoolment angered the youth, who saw it as an affront to their chief.

Incensed by the decision, they gathered, armed with machetes.

The timely intervention of security personnel brought the situation under control, with Yaa Asantewaa taken into custody.

Adom News’ Akwasi Dwamena has reported that she will be processed and arraigned before court.
