Police on hunt for Oliver Barker-Vormawor after viral video shows him taking keys from police van

The Ghana Police Service is actively searching for Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the Constitutional Rights and Policy Advisor for Democracy Hub and a leading figure in the ‘Fix The Country’ protests.

This follows a viral video showing him turning off the engine of a police van, seizing the key, and fleeing with it during a clash between protesters and the police at the 37 Intersection in Accra on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

The video captures the tense moment when Barker-Vormawor, amid the chaos of the protest, is seen grabbing the key from the van while a voice in the background shouts, “He has taken the key! Thief, thief! Arrest him, arrest him! He stole the key!”

The incident occurred during the second day of a three-day protest organized by Democracy Hub, aimed at highlighting economic mismanagement and other national concerns.

Earlier that day, police had arrested dozens of protesters, which led to heightened tensions between the two sides.

In a Facebook post following the event, Barker-Vormawor admitted to taking the keys from the police vehicle, explaining that he did so to immobilize it.

He justified his actions, stating, “Yes, I took the key of the police tow truck to demobilize it! I own my resistance to the unlawful seizure of the vehicle carrying our water.”

Barker-Vormawor was also seen in the video attempting to remove a police barricade, while officers kept repositioning it to maintain order.

The police have already detained 42 other protesters in connection with the clash and are intensifying their efforts to arrest Barker-Vormawor, urging the public to assist in his capture.
