The Central Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has deployed 120 security personnel to ensure law and order during the Council of State election slated for Tuesday, February 11.
At a brief inspection of the election venue at the Banquet Hall of the Regional Coordinating Council, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Adu, the Central Regional Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that the police would ensure adequate security for all.
DCOP Adu emphasized that there would be zero tolerance for violence, assuring that the police would strictly enforce the law to guarantee a peaceful election.
According to Article 89(1) of the 1992 Constitution, the Council of State is mandated “to counsel the President in the performance of his functions.” Articles 89 to 92 establish the Council of State and outline its composition and duties.
Its members include a former Chief Justice, a former Chief of Defence Staff, and a former Inspector-General of Police, each appointed by the President in consultation with Parliament.
Other members are the President of the National House of Chiefs, one representative from each region to be elected on Tuesday, and 11 other members appointed by the President.
Ten candidates are contesting for the position to represent the Central Region.
