The Accra Regional Police Command has reached an understanding with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding their upcoming protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) scheduled for Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
In a letter signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police and Deputy Regional Commander, Emmanuel Aryee Akonnor, the Police confirmed the demonstration would commence at 7:00 a.m. The letter was addressed to the NDC, affirming the agreed arrangements.
NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, had previously announced a nationwide protest on the same date, citing the EC’s refusal to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register ahead of the December elections as a primary reason.
He highlighted the party’s suspicions stemming from a perceived lack of transparency from the EC.
Additionally, concerns raised by the NDC Minority in Parliament regarding possible tampering with the voter register exhibition further fueled the party’s call for the protest.
Following discussions between the NDC and the police, the agreed demonstration route will follow this path: Kwame Nkrumah Circle – Farisco Traffic Light – TUC – National Theatre – Stadium – Parliament, where a petition will be presented to the Speaker.
The protest will conclude at the EC’s office, where a second petition will be delivered.
The police reassured the public of their commitment to ensuring security during the demonstration within their mandate.
