The People’s National Party (PNP) has expressed its disappointment in the John Mahama-led administration for failing to uphold Article 17(4) of the constitution which mandates the passage of an affirmative action law to address systemic gender inequalities.
no significant impact on the inclusion of more women in the NDC government.
“This administration’s failure to fulfill its constitutional mandate is unacceptable
and a betrayal of Ghanaian women,” the statement read in parts.
In light of this, PNP has issued an ultimatum to the President, demanding immediate steps to comply with the constitutional directive on affirmative action or face widespread resistance from the women of Ghana.
“Let it be clear that the respect Ghanaian women have for President John Dramani Mahama is derived solely from the Constitution, which he swore to uphold.
“If he continues to violate the Constitution, the women of Ghana will have no choice
but to rise in revolt against his authority,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, PNP has threatened to lead a historic demonstration if this disregard for women’s rights persists.
“If the President claims he cannot find ‘competent’ women within his party to appoint, we challenge him to look beyond partisan lines and select capable women from across Ghana.
“Enough is enough. Ghanaian women will no longer tolerate this injustice. It is
time for the President to act or face the consequences of his inaction,” the statement noted.
