Players need to show commitment when playing for Black Stars – Stephen Appiah

-

Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah has urged players to show greater commitment whenever they don the national jersey.

Recent lacklustre performances by the team have raised concerns among fans about the players’ dedication when representing Ghana.

During his appearance before the Parliament Sports Select Committee on Wednesday, Appiah emphasized that playing for the national team is a privilege that should not be taken lightly.

“I think it’s not only the captain; players who come to the national team have to be committed,” Appiah said.

Appiah reminded the players that only 23 individuals are chosen to represent a nation of over 30 million people, making the opportunity an honour.

“All of them need to show commitment because we have a population of 30-something million [people in Ghana] and only 23 players are selected to represent the nation.

“It’s an honour, and you have to know that you are representing Ghana. So whatever you have to do to make it work, you have to. For the past five years, we have been struggling. We are not seeing things like that. So I think it’s not only the captain.” he added.

The Black Stars are set to regroup for a doubleheader against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers next month.

Appiah’s remarks came as he addressed the Sports Select Committee’s review of a petition from the Save Ghana Football Forum.
