A planned protest to demand the declaration of the Techiman South parliamentary election results has been called off due to a lack of available Police personnel.
The protest was organized by the Concerned Youth of Techiman, who sought clarity on the constituency’s results after the collation process was disrupted.
Alleged misconduct by some NDC supporters during the collation reportedly led to the destruction of pink sheets and ballot papers, attacks on Electoral Commission (EC) materials, and the holding of journalists hostage.
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, the group’s convener, Adusei Poku, explained that the protest’s cancellation stemmed from the police’s inability to provide adequate security during the festive season.
“Recently, we met with the Regional Police Command to discuss our security needs for the demonstration. However, they highlighted concerns over the availability of security personnel, especially given the heightened demands for public safety during the festive period,” Mr Poku stated.
The Techiman South results remain contested, with both the NPP and NDC claiming victory. The EC has announced plans to re-collate the results to address the stalemate, but the opposition NDC has strongly opposed this move.
It is unclear when the protest will be rescheduled.
