The rivalry between Arsenal and Liverpool is an iconic one in English football, and set to be key in this season’s title race – as the Gunners and the Reds battle to dethrone Manchester City as the dominant force.

This clash at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening will be the first in which Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta comes up against Liverpool counterpart Arne Slot. Arteta had a sometimes fractious rivalry with former Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, but just because the German is no longer at the helm does not mean the Gunners tactician will underestimate the visitors from Merseyside.

“They [Liverpool] are a team that are looking good, that is clear, with ideas they are looking to implement. Every coach has their touch and characteristics that make the team’s style of play. You can see what he [Slot] is doing,” said Arteta.

The round gets going at the King Power Stadium on Friday night with a clash between Leicester City and Nottingham Forest – a rivalry referred to as the East Midlands derby (even though both teams have clubs which are in closer relative proximity).

Saturday is headlined by champions Manchester City hosting Southampton, while the evening match sees Everton host Fulham – with former Toffees manager Marco Silva looking to help the Cottagers take a full haul of points from Goodison Park.

“Last season, everyone that was seeing our team playing identified us as a full-on football club and overall, performance-wise, we really took a step forward,” said Silva on Fulham’s progress under his guidance.

“Let’s work hard to be better every single day and to develop individually and collectively as well.”

Sunday’s action leading into the Arsenal-Liverpool match features a potential thriller between Chelsea and Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge; a London derby between Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur; and a meeting of West Ham United and Manchester United – two teams which have endured rocky starts to their respective campaigns.
