After hours of a wild tussle at the Electoral Commission’s office, National Democratic Congress’ candidate, Baba Sadiq has emerged the Member of Parliament (MP- elect) for the Okaikwei Central constituency.
Confusion broke between the NDC candidate and the incumbent MP, Patrick Boamah, as they both declared themselves winners of the polls.
Baba Sadiq declared a 52.92% win and Patrick Yaw Boamah also projected a 52.35% win, causing a delay in the official declaration.
The Electoral Commission (EC) was called upon to resolve the impasse and verify the results.
While Boamah and his team reportedly lacked documented proof to substantiate their claims, Baba Sadiq presented a not-so-factual pink sheet to support his argument.
The discrepancies prompted a re-collation in the presence of party representatives and security personnel.
After a tense process, the Electoral Commission confirmed Baba Sadiq as the winner, securing 15,383 votes against Patrick Boamah’s 14,949, with a total of 30,463 votes cast.
This is the official results collated from 110 out of 141 polling stations in the constituency.
Supporters of the NDC erupted in celebrations outside the Electoral Commission’s office, where a strong security presence had been deployed to prevent potential disruptions.
Baba Sadiq’s victory marks a significant milestone for the NDC, as they record a full sweep of all constituencies in the Greater Accra Region.
His win brings Patrick Boamah’s parliamentary aspirations to a premature break after serving for three terms.
