A sixteen-year-old boy met his untimely death after he drowned in an abandoned quarry pit filled with water at Gomoa Asare-krom near Budumburam in the Gomoa East District in the Central region.
His 17-year-old friend has been hospitalised and is currently receiving treatment at the St Gregory Hospital.
According to some residents of Gomoa Asare-krom, the pits, which have been abandoned by the quarry owners, have become death traps.

In an interview with Adom News, Chief of Asare-krom, Nana Asare Ababio I, disclosed that the boy’s death brings to 10, children who have lost their lives in the abandoned pit.

“These pits are deep which carries water when it rains and the youth in this area have also resorted to them as a swimming place. We will urge the government to come and help cover these pits to save lives in this area,” he pleaded.
The Assemblyman for Gomoa Buduburam, Prince Odoom appealed to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to see to it that stone quarry owners cover their pits after work to save lives and property.
