German multilingual news network Deutsche Welle (DW-TV) and The Multimedia Group, through its JoyNews platform organised a street debate on illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, in Ghana.
The event took place on Friday, November 22, at the University of Ghana, Legon, drawing diverse participants from across society.
The debate brought together individuals from the educational sector, journalists, and people from varying socio-economic backgrounds to discuss the impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment and economy.
The discussions delved into how the galamsey menace, driven largely by unemployed youth, is contributing to the destruction of the country’s natural resources and infrastructure.
The participants exchanged views on potential solutions to curb illegal mining activities and restore the affected ecosystems.
Myjoyonline’s photojournalist, David Andoh was on-site to capture the vibrant and engaging moments of the debate.
