Four persons drowned when a canoe capsized on the Volta Lake at Senchi, in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern region.

The four were among eleven others who attempted to cross the river from Senchi to Old Akrade late Saturday afternoon.

The District National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Director, David Brown, who confirmed the incident, said the canoe capsized when water suddenly entered it due to high tide and the boisterous nature of the river.

In the process, the NADMO boss said some of them fell into the river and started swimming for survival but the four, two males and two females died.

According to him, some fishermen, who were on the river, were able to rescue seven of them.

The bodies have been sent to the Volta River Authority Hospital morgue in Akosombo.
