A fully completed clinic and maternity centre at Okaikrom in Sekyere East District of the Ashanti Region has been left to rot, while patients continue to receive health care in a congested facility.
Physician Assistant at the health centre, Joseph Marfo told Adom News’ Kwame Kulenu that the centre facility has 10 beds and has been abandoned for 10 years for reasons they don’t know.
“We also have a very big labour ward, which can take four beds in this same new facility but it is also going waste,” he lamented.
Kwame Kulenu visited the centre reported that, the paint is fading, while the cemented floor is also cracking.

Joseph Marfo explained that, there is an old facility with only one ward that has two beds serving both adults and children in 10 communities.
According to him when the two beds in the ward are occupied, they are forced to admit other patients on benches.
He added that, the labour ward is too small so sometimes it becomes difficult for two women to deliver at the same time when the need arises.
“We treat about 20 to 30 patients a day in this old facility – it is usually very congested and not good for quality healthcare – we need the new one opened soon,” he said.

Some patients who were there at the time of the visit said coming to the clinic is a challenge for them because of the conditions there but they have no other choice because it is the only health centre in the area.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive, Mary Boateng Marfo said her attention has been drawn to the issue and has assured that the facility will be in operation in the next one month.
