A philanthropist, Mr. Charles Owusu, on the occasion of his 40th birthday, has donated items worth GHȻ15,000 to the Kete-Krachi Local Prison in the Volta Region to support the upkeep of prisoners.
The items included twenty (20) mini bags of rice, ten mini bags of sugar, three gallons of Frytol cooking oil, three boxes of insecticide, five mini bags of beans, seven maxi bags of gari, ten maxi bags of maize, ten boxes of carbolic soap, and a cash of GHȻ1,000 to transport the items to the prison.
Presenting the items at the Prisons Headquarters at Cantonments in Accra, Mr. Owusu stated that, ‘prisoners are our friends and relatives and there was the need for society to assist in their upkeep so they can reform and become better citizens to support national development’. He added that the donation will be a yearly ritual to help improve upon the living conditions of prison inmates.
The Director of Prisons in charge of Human Resource Development, Mr. Kwame Kumah Kpeli, receiving the items on behalf of the Krachi prison, expressed his gratitude to the philanthropist for the gesture, and pledged the items will be used for their intended purposes to support the welfare needs of inmates of the prison.
The Director also used the occasion to call on other well-meaning individuals to emulate the move, as according him, catering for prisoners is a huge task that the government alone cannot handle.
