The Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), Dr. Tony Aubynn, has described the ongoing petroleum hub project in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region as a potential game changer for Ghana’s energy sector.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Aubynn expressed confidence that the hub, when completed, will enable Ghana to fully harness the benefits of its crude oil by refining it locally rather than exporting the raw product.
He emphasized that the Mahama-led government remains fully committed to the success of the project, which is estimated to cost $60 billion.
Dr. Aubynn added that the petroleum hub is not limited to refineries and tank farms but will evolve into a fully developed city.
“When I went to Jomoro, I told the traditional authorities that the dream is to build a Jomoro version of Rotterdam or Las Palmas. There aren’t many petroleum hubs in the world, and this will be the first in Africa. If we are able to do this, it will be a game changer,” he said.
Dr. Aubynn further encouraged local investors to take advantage of the numerous investment opportunities the project offers, highlighting incentives designed to maximize returns and increase local participation.
The first phase of the project was officially launched by former President Akufo-Addo on August 20, 2024, when he performed a sod-cutting ceremony at Nawule in Jomoro.
The project is structured in three independent phases, including the construction of a 300,000 barrels-per-day (bpsd) refinery, a petrochemical plant, as well as extensive storage and port facilities.
These are expected to add value to Ghana’s oil and gas resources and transform the country into a modern, diversified, and financially sustainable energy economy.
