Peter Amewu released after arrest over Sky Train scandal

-

Former Minister for Railways Development, John Peter Amewu, was arrested on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, by National Security operatives for questioning regarding the failed $2 million Sky Train Project.

However, reports from Accra-based Citi News indicate that he was released on the same day.

The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into the controversial deal, which has raised concerns about the misuse of funds.

This follows a statement from the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, on Monday, where he confirmed that funding had been received for the non-existent project.

Dr. Ayine revealed that the beneficiary company that received the funds in Mauritius was non-existent, and prosecutions are expected to begin by mid-April 2025.

In February 2025, former Railways Development Minister and Essikado Ketan MP, Joe Ghartey, told National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officials that the Sky Train project was structured as a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) transaction, meaning no payments had been made by the Railways Development Ministry during his tenure.

He cited the Auditor-General’s 2021 report, which confirmed that his ministry had taken the necessary steps to ensure it bore no financial liability for the feasibility studies related to the project.
