Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, has expressed his disappointment with the progress in the fight against illegal mining as water bodies continue to be polluted.
In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Monday, a visibly angry Dr Ashigbey said the people at the forefront of the fight are either incompetent or complicit.
“When Heritage Imperial took Erastus to court in their court document they talked about the fact that they were involved in a mining activity. We wrote to EPA about their status and it turned out they do not have the permit to do that.
“So, why are we not dealing with that? The people who are supposed to stop galamey are either incompetent or complicit because if the cat decides not to do something, the rat will not venture but what happens if the cat itself is involved?” he quizzed.
According to him, with President Akufo-Addo’s pledge to put his presidency on the line, the expectation was that the menace would have been a thing of the past as his tenure ends.
However, there has not been any political will to tackle the menace head-on.
“Leadership is not taking action because we know the people who import excavators into the country. They register at DVLA and their details are there so if we want to find them, we will but we don’t want to and that is why we are here,” he stated.
