Peaceful elections not sole responsibility of EC – Chairperson

-

The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, has stated it is not the sole responsibility of the EC Chairperson to ensure a peaceful election.

His comments come amid increasing public discussions about the EC’s role in upholding electoral integrity and ensuring a peaceful process.

A senior statesman and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, for instance, has labelled the EC as the greatest threat to Ghana’s democracy.

Raising concerns about the EC’s handling of the voter transfer, the tough-spoken politician has warned that if Ghanaians are not vigilant, the actions could lead the country into destruction.

However, Dr Asare has said ensuring a peaceful electoral process is a collective effort.

At a press briefing on Monday, he urged Ghanaians to disregard such claims even from prominent figures, stating the electoral body operates with a team of professionals dedicated to upholding the credibility of elections.

“The suggestion that the peace and the outcome of the election are hinged on the chairperson of the EC is completely untrue,” he said, adding “We urge the public to ignore statements even from prominent citizens that suggest that achieving peaceful elections in 2024 is somehow in the bosom of the Chairperson of the EC,” he said.

He therefore called on all stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and the general public, to collaborate in ensuring a fair and peaceful election.
