The National Peace Council has called an emergency meeting ahead of a potentially heated parliamentary session set for Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
The session follows a Supreme Court ruling that overturned Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
The Minority in Parliament has signaled plans to occupy the Majority side of the chamber until the Speaker issues a fresh ruling.
In a bid to prevent disruptions, the Peace Council is engaging key stakeholders, including Parliament’s leadership, as well as executives from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), along with other relevant authorities.
The main objective is to ensure that Tuesday’s proceedings unfold peacefully without any unrest.
A Peace Council member and spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, emphasized the need for all parties to act responsibly.
“We don’t want to see any unfortunate incidents. There are even rumors of potential military involvement, although no concrete evidence supports this. Nonetheless, we must be prepared for any eventuality,” he said.
Sheikh Shaibu urged all branches of government to look beyond party politics, viewing the current situation as an opportunity to strengthen Ghana’s democracy.
“This is not about one side or the other—it’s about making pivotal decisions that will shape our democratic future,” he added.
