The incumbent Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has announced his decision to challenge the outcome of the parliamentary election in court.
This follows the Electoral Commission’s (EC) declaration of Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the seat.
Baba Sadiq secured 15,383 votes, narrowly defeating Boamah, who garnered 14,949 votes.
Speaking to the media after the declaration on Monday, December 9, Mr Boamah expressed dissatisfaction with the results, citing alleged anomalies in the collation process and irregularities in polling station results.
He assured his supporters that he would seek redress through legal means.
“I know I have won the election. If I have won, I don’t need to use violence to claim my seat. I must respect due process, and that is what we are doing. We are consulting with our lawyers and preparing the necessary documents. Once the Gazette is issued and the filing period begins, we will proceed to the High Court,” he stated.
The Okaikwei Central race was one of the most closely watched contests in the 2024 elections, marked by delays and allegations of discrepancies during the collation process.
These tensions culminated in the declaration of the NDC candidate as the victor.
Mr Boamah expressed confidence in the judiciary to review the matter impartially, underscoring his commitment to upholding the rule of law.
