Passport offices to run three shifts – Ablakwa

-

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the implementation of the 24-hour passport services.

The initiative, he said, forms part of an extensive plan to overhaul the current passport regime, which is burdened by a backlog of applications.

Mr. Ablakwa said this during a tour of the passport head and regional office in Accra.

“You’ve also heard about our major reform. We want the passport administration in our country to operate 24 hours a day. This year, you need to be prepared as we will be running three shifts. We aim to reduce the waiting time for passport applications,” he announced.

The Minister highlighted five action plans to revamp the passport office and improve the passport application process in Ghana.

Mr. Ablakwa, who doubles as North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP), emphasised that there will be measures to ensure that clear targets are met expeditiously.

He also hinted at a possible reduction of the passport application fee, as a standard 32-page currently costs GH₵500.00.

The Minister assured that passport fees will be reduced in a manner that ensures equity in payment and that the rich subsidise on behalf of the needy.

He also affirmed his commitment to prioritise the welfare of staff.
