The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has characterized Speaker Alban Bagbin’s recent expulsion of four Members of Parliament as a sign of a deepening political crisis in Ghana.
He noted that, the Supreme Court’s recent stay of Speaker Bagbin’s ruling led to the indefinite adjournment of Parliament on Tuesday, October 22.
Speaking at the 80th anniversary of the St. Joseph the Worker Anglican Church in Accra on Sunday, October 27, Mr. Mahama commended Bagbin’s leadership during the tense parliamentary situation.
He emphasized the importance of constitutional reform to address emerging governance challenges.
“Recently, you saw what happened in Parliament. We almost faced a constitutional crisis. But for the Speaker’s mature handling in suspending the House, we might have seen a clash between the judiciary and Parliament. Our government is in crisis,” he said.
Mr. Mahama underscored the urgency of revisiting Ghana’s constitution to close loopholes and prevent future conflicts.
“We need to reset, we need to restart, we need to revise our constitution to avoid such issues in the future. Our attitudes are in crisis” he added.
