The African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA) has urged immediate consultations between Ghana’s top governmental leaders, President Akufo-Addo, Speaker Alban Bagbin, and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, to resolve the ongoing disagreement over parliamentary majority control.
This call follows persistent claims by the Minority caucus of holding the majority, despite a Supreme Court ruling suspending the Speaker’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, ACEPA’s Executive Director, Dr Rasheed Dramani, expressed deep concern over the parliamentary deadlock, warning of its potential to destabilize Ghana’s democracy.
“This situation poses a serious threat to our democracy,” he stated.
“My recommendation is for the three arms of government—our president, speaker, and chief justice to engage in dialogue, possibly with parliamentary leadership, to prevent any chaos.
“A failure to address this could result in a breakdown of law and order and, ultimately, our democratic processes. Imagine a scenario where the military steps in to resolve parliamentary disputes because the forum is no longer functioning—this could lead to the erosion of civilian authority with dangerous consequences,” he added.
