Parliament to sit at the Conference Centre during recall – Speaker

-

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has designated the Dome at the International Conference Centre as the venue for Parliament when it reconvenes on September 3.

In a letter dated August 27, 2024, signed by Speaker Bagbin, it was stated: “In view of the notice of summons on August 7, 2024, and pursuant to Article 112 of the Constitution, I appoint the Dome of the International Conference Centre as the meeting place.”

The change in venue is due to ongoing repairs at the main chamber for the 9th Parliament, which will not be completed in time for the recall.

During a recent tour of the chamber, Speaker Bagbin noted that the repairs, including updates to working tables, chairs, and furnishings, are expected to cost €2.26 million.

The recall was initiated by the Majority caucus to address critical national business following a sudden sine die recess announcement by Speaker Bagbin.

The Majority Leader disagreed with the Speaker’s decision, leading to the recall to handle public business, including a loan facility and outstanding bills.
